Black Tornado earns huge road win ROSEBURG Jill Carrigan and Kara Hwang came through with peak performances and North Medford passed a stern test in Southern Oregon Conference volleyball Tuesday. The Black Tornado overcame a large, hostile crowd to register a 15-12, 15-13 victory over Roseburg and take over sole leadership in the SOC standings. North finished the first round of conference play with a 7-0 record, while the Indians dropped to 6-1. "It was a war," North Medford coach Ron Beick said. "It was a packed house, loud and rocking." In the opening game, Roseburg took a 3-0 lead and surged to an 11-4 margin before the Black Tornado changed the momentum by reeling off five unanswered points. "We made some adjustments on our blocking and settled down on our ball control," said Beick. Roseburg scored its final point of the game for a 12-9 lead. Then North scored points on a Kaci Maldonado serve and Candace Fleeners stuff block against Roseburg star Megan Morley. After a pair of sideouts, Hwang served four straight points to clinch the game. "(Hwang) did a good job of placing her serves," said Beick. "We kept the ball away from their two primary passers." The second game was a role reversal. This time North took leads of 6-1 and 11-7 before Roseburg made a run to grab a 12-11 advantage in front of the frenzied crowd. Kendra Mitchell produced a successful attack in the middle for a sideout, then served two straight points to put North ahead 13-12. Morleys kill tied the game at 13 and Carrigan got a kill to give North the serve with the game still knotted. Carrigan and Rachelle Treger got a key stuff block on Morley for the 14th point and Morleys hitting error ended the match. "The team showed a lot of maturity to go down 12-11 with the noise of that gym and respond the way they did," said Beick. ASHLAND 16-15, CRATER 14-9 At Central Point, the Grizzlies capitalized on Craters miscues to win a close match. The Comets suffered 12 missed serves and committed 21 hitting errors to contribute to their loss. Crater had game point at 14-13 in the first game but failed to capitalize, and Ashland (4-3 SOC) won three consecutive points to take the game. Ashley Sence, who hadnt played all night, had a block for match point. Sophomore Lichen Murray had nine kills and seven digs for Ashland. SOUTH MEDFORD 15-15, KLAMATH UNION 2-4, South Medford was nearly perfect in a dominating effort against Klamath Union. Senior Megan Berry served the first 10 points of the first game, including five aces. Senior middles Carrie Doren and Kellie Thomas each had four kills and combined for only one hitting error. South Medford (7-5, 4-3 SOC) plays at Ashland Thursday night. EAGLE POINT 15-15, GRANTS PASS 11-3 At Eagle Point, Amanda Grieve had a hot hand at the service line and junior middle Kara Stuart registered seven kills as Eagle Point won its first Southern Oregon Conference match since 1998. Senior outside hitter Brynna Jacobson, junior outside hitter Dani Rouhier and senior right side Bev Gonsalves each added five kills and Aubrey Harrington recorded 21 assists for the Eagles, now 1-6 in the SOC. The first game was tied 5-5 when Grieve served points six through 11, and the Eagles were on their way. Eagle Point then roared to an 11-1 advantage in Game 2 and coasted to the victory.
