Next to me, on another acre, they’re growing massive amounts of stinky pot. It’s so stinky I can’t go outside in the summer, and my daughter hates coming over to visit (not because of me, but because of the pot odor). The city has gone back and forth on this issue, but I think there’s a limit on the number of plants now. I can’t get a clear answer so far as to how many plants they can grow. Could you find out for me? — Jody S., Medford. The City Council has wrestled with this issue for about two years now and will be asking voters this November if they want to allow recreational sales in Medford plus a 3-percent tax. The council will also ask voters if they want to ban indoor and outdoor pot grows. In July 2015, the council decided to limit marijuana gardens to just four plants, for both medical and recreational grows, after it had received complaints from residents about the pungent smell of flowering cannabis. The four-plant limit is similar to Oregon law, which allows six plants for a medical marijuana patient but only four plants for recreational reasons. However, the law didn’t take effect until Nov. 1, 2015, well past the end of the growing season. However, the ordinance will be in effect next summer, so, Jody, your neighbors will have a four-plant limit. Under state law, existing licensed medical marijuana growers who have been providing cannabis for multiple patients can grow up to 96 plants in rural areas and 24 on an urban lot.
