The rationale included: the city's right to do so in the event of a water shortage, the self-imposed limit of emergency use only for TAP water purchased from Medford, the cost of using TAP water, and the goal of not drawing down water stored in the city's reservoir for safety's sake (toxicity or emergency use issues). Yet, the Normal Avenue Neighborhood Plan, which went to the City Council for a first reading Aug. 4, potentially would annex into the city 94 acres and add about 500 residential units and new water users. Can Ashland accommodate this anticipated growth after the Normal Avenue Neighborhood is developed as planned without ongoing restrictions on water, increasing water costs and decreasing water quality borne by all Ashlanders? We need to resolve water resource issues before proceeding with such large-scale development. Sabra Hoffman Ashland Facts are out there In response to yet another letter from Gordon DeVos regarding what he believes went on with the Founding Fathers, I would urge MT readers to read one or both of these two scholarly books on what our founders actually did or did not believe: "Nature's God, The Heretical Origins of the American Republic" (Stewart) and "One Nation Under Many Gods "Manseau). These will open your mind to what was really happening as we grew toward independence and beyond, even to this day. We are a great nation precisely because we are "one from many" — beliefs, that is. Richard Ukena Ashland Most unwanted People who care about wildlife can put cheap thrill seeker Kristy Lee Cook on their "most unwanted list" for killing sandhill cranes for fun and self-aggrandisement. Loser guys looking for mindless entertainment while sucking on growler beers can find it on her unknown TV show featuring her bucket list of adventures. Killing sandhill cranes illustrates the bottom rung of hunting activity. Nobody eats cranes, and they are hardly challenging targets as they congregate on river flats migrating to and from their breeding grounds. These beautiful birds mate for life, can live for 20 years, and are endangered in certain areas of the country. There are lots of talented performers in our valley, the Mail Triune should showcase someone with class who gives our area a better image. S. Mackler Jacksonville Killing is appalling In a world that is collapsing from the devastation of war and slaughtered schoolchildren, the reckless killing of wildlife by Ms. Cook and friends is appalling. We are witness to the Earth's sixth great extinction, and within a few years, elephants, lions, whales and hundreds of other species are predicted to vanish as a result of such acts. Obviously, the girls are so desperate for fame that they feel compelled to murder, for murder it is. Science shows that sandhill cranes and other animals have brains, minds and feelings comparable to those of humans. The only real difference is that animals don't do what people do to them. G.A.
