Then came the championship semifinal round, and the Comets rolled out their big guns. When the smoke cleared, the Comets were back in first place. Bryson Gutches (135), Chase Maloney (152), Ron Lee (171) and Taylor Wilkerson (275) charged through the semifinal round with decisive victories to put the Comets in good position for their second straight title and their fifth in seven years. Advertisement The Comets amassed a whopping 52½ points in the semifinal round to finish the day with 142½ and build a 29-point lead over Southern Oregon Conference rival Roseburg, which also surpassed West Linn. Roseburg stood in second place with 113½ points and West Linn was third with 108. Redmond held down fourth with 97½ . "All four of our guys who won in the semifinals scored extra points with falls, technical falls or major decisions — that shows how motivated they were to help out the team," Crater coach Greg Haga said. "They knew we were behind going into this round." Gutches launched the Friday night onslaught with a 28-second fall over Gresham’s Nick Clark at 135 pounds. Maloney — Gutches’ cousin — followed with a 10-0 major decision over Cleveland’s Brock Luedtke at 152 pounds, and a few minutes later, Lee mauled Pendleton’s Brad Lawrence in a 171-pound semifinal, registering a 22-7 technical fall. Wilkerson capped the Comets’ dominance by pinning Pendleton’s Sean Orr in a matchup of heavyweights. "I was fired-up when I went out there tonight," said Lee, who improved his season record to 33-2. "You’re motivated to begin with, but knowing how much your match means to your team just makes you wrestle harder." Maloney encountered a judo enthusiast in Luedtke, but refused to tie up with the Cleveland grappler and attacked him from out in the open. "I had to be a little careful, but I knew he couldn’t beat me if I didn’t tie up," said Maloney, who moved his record to 35-4. Tyler Weathers was the only Crater competitor who failed to win his semifinal bout. The 119-pound sophomore dropped a 7-1 decision to Redmond senior Travis Ralls that dropped him into the consolation bracket. The only other Crater wrestler still going is 171-pound Cody Clark, who lost his quarterfinal match Friday morning when he was pinned by Southridge standout Shaun Dee but bounced back with a victory in the consolation bracket later in the day. Two other local wrestlers advanced to the finals. Eagle Point’s Stephen Price (140) broke away from a 0-0 tie after one period to score a 6-1 win over Churchill’s Nick Cautrell, while North Medford’s Rob Folsom (160) remained unbeaten on the season (33-0) with a 9-6 win over Hermiston’s Andy Hall. "I threw the guy (Cautrell) for a takedown in the second period and then I got a low single," said Price, who ran his record to 37-5. "At that point, I knew I was going to win." Roseburg, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 in the semifinals. Trevor Lofstedt (112) and Isaac Hebert (145) moved on but Kevin Beavers (119) and Austin Shoptaw (171)weren’t so fortunate. Seth Thomas (160) is the other Roseburg wrestler still going in the tournament. West Linn advanced only one competitor to the finals — Matt Kim at 119 pounds — but the Lions still have eight wrestlers competing in the consolation bracket.
