I was wondering how much that fancy tattoo cost the city and taxpayers. Wouldn’t the money have been better spent on a swimming pool? — Barbara M., Medford First of all, Barbara, where have you been? The Mail Tribune has written many articles about the murals that were painted on the columns supporting Interstate 5 through Hawthorne Park. The mural project, which was completed last summer, was prompted by a $1.7 million upgrade of Hawthorne Park to make it more family-friendly. The city of Medford set aside $50,000 for the art project, which included a $25,000 grant from the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. The contract for the project was $45,300. Not counting materials and supplies, the fee for the artists was $27,000. ODOT spent another $14,700 to remove lead-based paint from the columns before the murals were painted. As to whether the money would have been better spent elsewhere, the $50,000 would barely make a dent in the millions of dollars required to build a municipal swimming pool.
