At noon Friday, the city's Site Plan & Architectural Commission will consider plans for a Five Guys Burgers & Fries restaurant on the east side of Center Drive, about 1,000 feet north of Garfield Street, according to plans submitted to the commission. The public hearing will be held at City Hall, 411 W. Eighth St., in the council chambers. Neither Five Guys' media hotline nor Medford planning officials could be reached for comment Monday. The restaurant would be in the Southgate Center across from the Walmart Superstore, according to the plans. Other nearby businesses include Farmer's Insurance, Northwest Community Credit Union, EC Blend E-Liquid Flavors and The RRRink. The proposed building would be 4,100 square feet. The proposed site plan would add 25 parking spaces and two bicycle racks to the site. City planning staff recommended approval for the site plan. The franchise owner, Mel Garges of Eugene, could not be reached immediately for comment Monday. Garges told the Mail Tribune in October that if all went well with his plans, "we're hoping to open next summer." Garges owns two Five Guys restaurants in Eugene and one in Bend. He previously said he has plans to build two locations in Medford and one more in an unspecified location, for a total of six stores. Five Guys opened its first location in 1986 in Arlington, Va., according to the company's website. It has since opened more than 1,000 locations in 47 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces.
