Tornado sweeps Tribe, has first to itself ROSEBURG -- North Medford's bats haven't exactly sent softball opponents scurrying for cover this spring. Nonetheless, the Black Tornado has history on its side. Junior pitcher Steph Coe survived North Medford's shaky defensive start, then tossed 13 scoreless innings Saturday in a critical Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader sweep of Roseburg at Stewart Park. "We haven't gone to Roseburg in three years, and I didn't know what to expect," North Medford coach Larry Binney said. "But the kids got after it today." Coe fanned nine batters and walked two in the two games as the 10th-ranked Tornado improved to 4-0 in conference and 6-4 overall. North is now alone in first place. "You've still got to get over that Medford mystique," said Roseburg coach Craig Munion. "When you've been doing it as long as they have, it's still there." Roseburg committed nine errors on the day, including seven in the first game. "I've been happy all year with our defense," Munion said. "When we'd make an error, we'd bounce back. Today we didn't and it opened the floodgates." After letting a 2-0 lead slip away in the bottom of the first, North scored one run in the second and third innings. Britney Hillyer singled and came home on Sandy Horn's base hit in the second. Coe singled and then rode home on Amy Allen's base hit in the third. Coe was 2-for-4, with two stolen bases and two runs. Allen was also 2-for-4. In the second game, North scored twice in the first inning as Jill Carrigan knocked in Horn for one run and then scored on a base hit by Allen. Carrigan was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. "A lot of people contributed in a lot of little ways today," Binney said. "Tai Kinney pinch-hit a couple of times and she's been battling back spasms. Tina Quintero did a tremendous job at second base." Roseburg's Erin Goodell and Lindsey O'Byrne were both 2-for-3 in the second game.
