Last week, the management of the Britt Festivals in Jacksonville unveiled parts of its new master plan. One of those proposals was for an 8-foot-high fence, topped with barbed wire and designed to keep non-paying customers from entering the grounds and getting a free concert. Officials also said that some folks pose potential safety hazards outside the grounds, particularly from smoking in wooded areas. Opposition was raised over both the appropriateness of such a fence for the Britt grounds, and that being able to hear concerts from outside the venue has a long tradition in the city for residents. We asked: " What do you think of the proposal by the Britt Festivals to erect an 8-foot-high, barbed-wire-topped fence around its concert venue?" Advertisement You answers follow ... loud and clear. Be sure to take a moment and respond to this week’s new question. This is a joke, right? — Andrew B., West Burke, Vermont When is this going to stop? Jacksonville has invited people to come enjoy music and then (Britt) gets angry when a few listen for free? Why not a board fence, non-ticket buyers could still listen but not be seen or heard. — Victoria M., Central Point Sounds a little sticky to me. A sign reading: ALL TRESPASSERS WILL BE PUNISHED BY SITTING THROUGH A WONDERFUL CONCERT, WITH A YACKITY-YACK MOUTH IN BACK OF YOU. — Joyce H., Rogue River I am totally against it. It is a very hostile and agressive idea. It reminds me of some big city brand of paranoia. — Diane P., Ashland Since the noise bothers the neighbors (hence limiting the encores) and now thefree listeners should be barred and barbed, I suggest the county sell theproperty, like Miles Field, and move the venue to an area where the neighbors will not be bothered and freebies not obtainable. I am sure a good use could be found for the parcel and think of the profit. — Dennis W., Talent I totally disagree with the fence. Many of the concerts are sold out or the admission is too much for some people. The people of Jacksonville get to listen, whether they want to or not and they haven’t paid; so what is the difference if some people sit outside and listen as long as there are no problems with loud, obnoxious behavior? — June R., Medford Will the performances be so bad that they have to keep the audience captive till the end? — Robert M., Ashland I think Britt should be allowed to do whatever the heck they want to do. Keep the riff-raff out. If you want to see a concert, buy a ticket.— Mike S., Medford In 10 years, we’ve never noticed this "problem" outside the existing fence. We attend for the atmosphere! I can’t believe this proposal would ever pass state, county or parental regulations. — Mary G., Gold Hill This is a ridiculous idea. If they want to hide the beautiful grounds, then go with a 12-foot-high fence and make it look like a prison yard. — Kathy M., Medford Bad idea!
