The Beavers focused on the pass with Brandin Cooks and Sean Mannion in the fold, but it wasn’t until late in the season that the Beavers established a ground game. There was a strong start to this season in the run game, with 176 yards against Portland State and 164 at Hawaii. But it faded some for the next two games. The Beavers had 97 yards against San Diego State and then sputtered to 58 at USC. On Saturday, the run game made a big comeback. OSU sliced through Colorado for 167 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. “It’s great for our offense. We’ve always been trying to find the right balance and I think we’re getting closer to it,” Mannion said. “I think we’re playing good football and the yards or whatever, the touchdowns, might not be what they were last year, but I think you look at our team and we’re playing very efficiently and that’s what I want more than anything.” Terron Ward had 12 carries for 102 yards and two scores with long runs of 33 and 27 yards at Colorado. Storm Woods had 69 yards on 13 attempts and one touchdown. The performance enabled Mannion to be more efficient in throwing the football. He completed 27 of 37 passes for 278 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. “When we run it well, it makes it so much easier for Sean and those offensive linemen who don’t have to be in pass pro for over 50 times a game,” Ward said. “So when have productive runs on the ground, gaining or averaging over 5 yards a carry, having big explosive runs, it makes it easy on those guys and we have a little part in doing that, but those (offensive linemen), they’ve been doing a great job this season.” Tackle Sean Harlow said getting a little more balance back has been fun for the offensive linemen. “It feels good to be dominant. To gain the trust of the coaches feels good, too,” Harlow said. “Last year they only trusted us to throw the rock, so it feels good to be dominant and to be balanced on offense. That helps us out a lot, too. “It opens up the play-action pass, it doesn’t allow the defensive ends and the D-line in general to just pin their ears back and know when we’re going to pass. It definitely just helps us out overall.” For the season, Ward has 59 carries for 343 yards and six touchdowns and Woods has 59 carries for 342 with three scores. The numbers would be identical, but Woods has lost 6 yards to Ward’s 5 in losses. The Beavers have 662 total yards on the ground, an average of 132.4 yards a game. “It’s awesome to have two great backs back there that can run the rock really well,” Harlow said. “Averaging 5 yards or something like that a carry and that’s not bad at all.” When the run game is clicking, it makes all aspects of the offense go smoothly. A good run on first or second down results in easier third-down situations. “To me, the biggest thing is when you have positive runs on the early downs and you get into third and short. It can really churn out some long drives,” Mannion said. “So that’s big, letting our defense rest and keeping the other team off the field.” It also forces the opposing defense to stay in the game. That can wear those players down physically and psychologically. “I know when I played defense in high school, you never wanted a team to run on you. That just makes it that much more difficult to defend,” Ward said. “You can’t be crowding the line and have a deep ball over your head for the easy score. So when we’re running the ball, I know it puts pressure on those linebackers and those (defensive backs).
