Kevin Scott Copeland, 35, was arrested Tuesday in Scottsdale, a suburb of Phoenix, on a Josephine County warrant charging him with murder in the death of Juan M. Hernandez, 37, of Grants Pass. He also was charged with being a felon in possession of a gun. Copeland was lodged in the Maricopa County Jail pending extradition to Grants Pass, police said. According to previous news reports, Hernandez was found dead around 2:15 a.m. Aug. 3, 2013, in the 800 block of Fruitdale Drive. Hernandez, a local contractor and father of two, had suffered a gunshot wound to the head, police said at the time. Police also said at the time they were seeking information about a second man who might have been with Hernandez at nearby Herb's La Casita restaurant and bar. On Tuesday, police said they interviewed Copeland at the time as a witness. It was not immediately clear Tuesday whether he was the man with Hernandez at Herb's. The evidence supporting Copeland's arrest was not announced Tuesday. Police said any further information regarding the case will be released at the discretion of the Josephine County District Attorney's Office. According to Josephine County Circuit Court records, Copeland is listed as a resident of Placerville, Calif. On March 16, local prosecutors filed charges in the case, but an arrest warrant affidavit detailing the facts of the case has been sealed. Shaun Hall of the Daily Courier contributed to this report.
