THEATER Camelot Theatre presents 'Arsenic and Old Lace' Comment By Laurie Heuston Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Laurie Heuston Mail Tribune Posted Apr. 27, 2015 at 1:00 PM By Laurie Heuston Mail Tribune Posted Apr. 27, 2015 at 1:00 PM » Social News Playwright Joseph Kesselring's dark, farcical comedy presents two charming spinsters, Abby and Martha Brewster, who murder lonely widowers by poisoning them with glasses of elderberry wine laced with "just a pinch" of cyanide. A Broadway hit in 1941, the famous story also was a success on the silver screen in 1944, directed by Frank Capra and starring Cary Grant and Boris Karloff. Directed by Paul R. Jones, Camelot's production of "Arsenic and Old Lace" features Shirley Patton as Abby Brewster and Brandy Carson as Martha Brewster. Tyler Ward plays their nephew, Mortimer, who must deal with the Brooklyn police department to keep his aunties out of jail. A second nephew, played by Brian M. O’Connor, thinks he is Teddy Roosevelt, and a third, played by Don Matthews, bears a striking resemblance to Karloff. “This play is often called a 'chestnut,’ with the implied meaning of something fondly and enthusiastically remembered," Jones says. "My first encounter with the story was the film version. I directed it for the first time while teaching at College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. When Livia (Genise) announced it as part of the 2015 season, I told her that I would really enjoy another shot at directing it — this time with an age-appropriate cast." "Arsenic and Old Lace" previews at 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, April 29-30, and opens Friday, May 1, at Camelot Theatre, 101 Talent Ave., Talent. The April 29 show is a fundraiser for the Tudor Guild, and tickets cost $25. Tickets for the April 30 preview cost $12. A pay-what-you-can performance will be offered at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 6. Curtain for all other shows is at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets cost $25, $23 for seniors and students and can be purchased online at camelottheatre.org or by calling 541-535-5250. There is a box office fee of $4 on all ticket purchases. Reserved seating is available for an additional $2 per ticket. Student rush tickets cost $10 and can be purchased 10 minutes before performances. Box office hours are noon to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and one hour before performances. Carson and Patton are reunited in this Camelot production. They performed in "Waiting for Godot," the first show presented by Oregon Stage Works, in addition to "Lettice and Lovage" and "A Perfect Ganesh." Carson has played several roles in Southern Oregon University's theater arts productions, including Thelma Cates in "'night, Mother." She's also an enthusiastic reader for the Ashland New Plays Festival. Patton was a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's acting company for 30 season. She's appeared in many productions at Camelot Theatre, including “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Zorba,” “Spitfire Grill,” “Grapes of Wrath,” “Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks” and “The Best Man.” Set design for “Arsenic and Old Lace” is by Don Zastoupil, costumes are by Donna Boehm, audio and video is by O'Connor, and lighting is by Evan Carbonne.
