Pottruff receives honor By KEVIN GOFF Dona Pottruff has been serving the Southern Oregon bowling community for almost four decades. Recently, the Central Point resident had some recognition roll her way. Pottruff, a member of the Medford Women's Bowling Association, was selected by the Distinguished Service Award Committee as the 2001 recipient of this prestigious award. "It was a great honor to receive the award," said Pottruff, who has been a member of the WBA for 39 years. "To consider all the outstanding women there are in the state involved with bowling, it's just such a wonderful honor." Pottruff is currently bowling in two leagues and has been league Secretary, Vice President and has helped form two leagues. She has also been very active for the past 35 years in the Medford youth bowling program as a junior coach and director of public relations and publicity. In 1971, Pottruff organized a junior travel league that bowled throughout Southern Oregon. "I think it's easier to do for others and much more fun," said Pottruff of her award. "I couldn't have done it all by myself. There have been so many people that have really helped me over the years." In 1983, Pottruff was inducted into the Medford WBA Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service and, in 1969, she was honored with the Pinfare Bowler of the Year award by the Mail Tribune. She has also been instrumental in getting local bowlers recognition and helped guide one student to the professional ranks. Pottruff turned in the names of two local bowlers who later received the Mabel Marr's Star of the future Award and the Ray Wise Memorial Award. Marshall Holman, one of Pottruff's junior students, later joined the professional circuit where he competed for several years. Pottruff has received plaques for her efforts with junior bowlers, publicity work and was named Amateur Athlete of the week in 1996 by KDRV-Channel12 for promoting bowlers scores and activities. Pottruff not only promotes the sport but also excels in it. She has bowled in many WIBC tournaments, is a 600 series bowler and has won numerous awards in leagues and local tournaments.
