Jean lived a vibrant, creative life as a musician, artist, and community leader with a great love for people, and an impeccable sense of humor. A bassist for the Chicago Woman's Symphony, she caught the eye and heart of Edwin "Sherb" Bowers, a young sailor on leave in Chicago, Ill. and they married June 11, 1944. Soon after, they moved to the Rogue Valley where they settled and raised their eight children. A life-long patron of the arts, Jean was a bassist for the Southern Oregon Symphony Orchestra and a soloist for the SOSC Concert Choir and the Rogue Valley Opera Association, amongst other organizations. She loved opera and musicals and was delighted to perform in many local productions. In addition, she was an avid painter and president of the Southern Oregon Art Society, serving as a representative to our sister city of Alba, Italy in 1972. Jean's passion for music continued in later years ministering through song. She shared her love of the Lord and made many friends through her tireless volunteering for church and community, singing at local nursing and retirement homes and the Veterans Administration. Her legacy of unconditional love and enduring faith continue to inspire all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Jeanne Bowers. She is survived by her sister, Lynn Burnette; sons, Dana, Paul, and Grant Bowers; and daughters, Kathleen Olney, Julie Wright, Aisha Bowers, and Lisa Erden; 20 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. A most beloved mother and grandmother, and known as 'Mom' to countless others, she will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Memory Gardens Memorial Park and Mortuary in Medford, Ore.
