Luna Nova The chamber music ensemble includes the mandolin in its mix The Siskiyou Institute will kick off its spring concert season with the San Francisco-based chamber music group, the Luna Nova Quartet. The group will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the Old Siskiyou Barn in Ashland. As part of the Siskiyou Institute's Artists In The Schools program, the quartet will give a workshop Friday morning for the Ashland High School music department. The group also will host a master class at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at the Old Siskiyou Barn. The Luna Nova Quartet was formed to instill and inspire the traditional quartet medium with a compelling instrumental voice and fresh experience for the chamber audience. To do that, the group has introduced the mandolin into its format. Although it has a more recent history than that of the violin, the mandolin's history parallels the development of the modern violin. Advertisement There are striking similarities between the two instrument families. The distinctive, melodic layerings of the mandolin are combined with the traditional elements of the standard string ensemble. The resulting sound is a balance of the innovative with the classical and the modern infused with the traditional. Luna Nova Quartet brings to its concert performances contemporary energy and expression through imaginative arrangements, original compositions and folk music adaptations. In addition, the group features original interpretations of some of the great traditional classical instrumental works by master composers such as J.S. Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Ludwig van Beethoven, Erik Satie, Gioacchino Rossini and Antonin Dvorak. Luna Nova Quartet will premiere a new composition at the Old Siskiyou Barn, titled "Dragonfly." Tickets for the concert are $20 and student discounts are available. Tickets for the master class are $10 and $5 for students. This workshop and master class on stringed instruments is open to students and teachers and will focus on several topics, including performing in an ensemble setting, choosing repertoire, teaching techniques and much more.
