Mail Tribune 100, Dec. 30, 1922 continued By Alissa Corman Dec 31, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Dec. 30, 1922 continued ARREST 3 BOYS FOR ‘HIJACKING’ MOONSHINE CAR Atwood Vann, George England and Boyd Brandt, youths from 18 to 20 years of age, are out on $250 bonds, charged with “hijacking” the booze auto of Thomas Bryan, arrested a week or ten days ago for having liquor in his possession. Bryan was arrested by the police, when he left his booze laden car in Hittson’s garage. The youths were employed in the place. It is alleged by the sheriff’s office, that the accused trio of young men “beat the police” to the liquor and took six sacks of whiskey and gin, totaling in the neighborhood of 50 bottles. This left in the car, 12 case of whiskey, gin and champagne, valued at $3,000 at the present price of hootch. The police swooped down on Bryan, while he was asleep in the car. According to Sheriff Terrill, the youths were arrested when “booze showed up around town.” The official admits he was “tipped off” to the alleged “hijacking” “by a fellow whose name I won’t tell you.” There was also a shrinkage in the known quantity in the car, and what the check showed. Around this side issue of the booze seizure, ugly rumors involving the police have been seething, and Sheriff Terrill branded them as “lies, and not a speck of truth in them.” Vann, England and Brandt have been arraigned, and their hearing will be held as soon as District Attorney Rawles Moore is able to attend to his official duties. WOMEN ORGANIZE TO SUPPORT WORK H. DEMONSTRATION In order that the work of the home demonstration agent might prove as effective in the future as it has in the past years, a group of representative women of the county met yesterday and formed themselves into an executive committee, pledging their services and time to the furtherance of the work of that office. It is hoped that in this way no break in the work will occur as the result of the resignation of Miss Pool and the assuming of that office by Miss Grayce Teich. The committee plans to meet once each month at which time plans for the work will be discussed and a program made out. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
