MEDFORD Council mops up fire damage Seeks to improve relations with Fire District No. 2 By Damian Mann Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 21, 2014 @ 5:35 pm By Damian Mann Mail Tribune Posted Aug. 21, 2014 @ 5:35 pm » Social News Medford City Council on Thursday attempted to smooth over hurt feelings from a failed effort to consolidate Medford Fire-Rescue and Jackson County Fire District No. 3 but still pushed for more cooperation between fire districts. “This has been a challenging process,” Councilor Chris Corcoran said. “In those challenges, there were a lot of negatives.” The council approved a resolution to study ways that Medford fire could work more cooperatively with Fire District 3 and surrounding fire districts, but consolidation talks have been abandoned. Dan Marcisz, vice president of Medford Rural Fire Protection District No. 2, said his district supported more cooperation but encouraged the City Council to keep everyone informed of ongoing discussions. Marcisz’s fire district had complained earlier that it was left out of some of the discussions between Medford fire and District 3. An exhaustive study of possible consolidation turned emotional over the past year, souring a 51-year relationship with Fire District No. 2, which contracts with Medford fire for service. “We want to make sure the council will seek all available communications with the district, so there are no surprises that come up anymore,” Marcisz said. The resolution passed unanimously by the council specifically states that Fire District 2 should be included in any talks about agreements with other districts. Marcisz and the council both thought the selection of Brian Fish as the new Medford fire chief was a step in the right direction to smooth over relations. Medford fire and Fire District 3 already have agreements in place to handle calls in each others' jurisdictions. Some of the suggestions for more cooperation include more joint training, including for battalion chiefs and captains, along with standardized guidelines for operations and a regional fire investigation plan.
