Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 15, 2005 Survey focuses on Central Point services By BUFFY POLLOCK for the Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — Do you like where you live? Do you want a community center? What do you think about the improvements downtown? Beginning this week, some 400 residents may find themselves on the receiving end of a random phone call wanting to know how much they love — or don’t — their fair city. City Administrator Phil Messina said a similar survey was conducted citywide in recent years. But the new study would help gauge public perception of city services and help with future planning. Data will be collected randomly by representatives of The Thomas Group, a local research organization, and individual information provided by local residents will be confidential. A focus of the study is to determine needed changes to a 1998 strategic plan. Advertisement "We’d like to know whether our citizens are still in agreement with the 1998 Strategic Plan," Messina said. "This survey should give us a baseline of public opinion about city services." The survey will include information about a resident’s background, including homeowner status, age and gender. Questions will delve into satisfaction levels on traffic planning, available housing, downtown improvements and public safety, among other issues. In addition, Community Development Director Tom Humphrey said the survey would test the waters for a possible bond measure to renovate the old Central Point Elementary gymnasium into a community center and Parks and Recreation offices. The bond measure would increase property taxes 50 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation. "We always take unsolicited comments from people who want us to know how they feel," said Humphrey. "We’re trying to target people we might not normally see at meetings who are busy with kids or sports events or who wouldn’t normally have the time or interest or impulse to attend public meetings."
