She was born in Malvern, Ark. to Joe Taylor Roberts and Nellie Carpenter. She graduated from Central Point High School in 1945. From 1946 to 1950, she worked for Bear Creek, but destiny had other plans. Marian met and married Byron D. Winningham, a respected police detective from Roseburg, Ore., February 19, 1950 in Reno, Nev. after a whirlwind romance that lasted many years. They were the original owners of Abby’s Pizza in Medford. To friends and family she was known as “Mighty Mo” as there was nothing she could not do once she had put her mind and hands to it. Having a special gift and love for gardening she was also known as the “Petunia Goddess” and people often admired the petunias that grew prolifically in her garden. Marian was well known in the community for her precious love for others, generous and giving nature, charitable contributions even when she had little to give, and for being a trustworthy and loyal friend. Her late husband often spoke of her ability to perform magic in the kitchen, “When the cupboards were bare, she could pull the rabbit out of the hat, and it was delicious!” Marian was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Byron in 2000. She is survived by her son, Bill Winningham and his wife, Connie, of Jacksonville, Ore; her daughter, Sherry Stapels of Pennsylvania; her two granddaughters, Cari and Chris; and her sisters-in-law, Evelin Smith and Mabel Dykstra of the Rogue Valley. At her request, there will be no services and Marian would be grateful if others would instead make contributions to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3101 S.W.
