Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 26, 2006 Duck-hunting zones debated Outdoor Notes State waterfowl managers are asking the public for their thoughts about the duck-hunting zone structure used to govern sport-hunting over the past decade. Every five years, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allows flyway states to consider potential changes in zone boundaries and zone configurations for future duck-hunting seasons. The process is separate from the annual choosing of hunting seasons and bag limits. In the past, hunters have expressed support for Oregon’s option of splitting the state into two hunting zones and allowing for a single split season in one or both zones, says Brad Bales, waterfowl biologist for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. Another option includes splitting Oregon into three zones, but allowing no split seasons within the zones. The third and last option offered by the service is split seasons statewide and no zones. Advertisement The current configuration has all of western Oregon and the Columbia Basin as its Zone 1 and the rest of the state in Zone 2. The ODFW currently is recommending no change, Bales says. But they still want to collect comment from any interested Oregonians. If any changes are approved by the service, they could be in place for the 2006 season. Comments are due by Feb. 20.
