Finding good-quality child care is never easy, but for parents of disabled kids, it’s even tougher. Just try setting up after-school care for an 8-year-old boy with a learning disability, emotional issues and a communication disorder. Fortunately, there’s a solution: It’s the Rogue Valley chapter of Easter Seals Oregon. Through programs that include after-school care, Saturday recreation and summer day camps, kids ages 5 to 18 gain enrichment and education — and their families gain a little flexibility. However, with a budget of no more than $110,000 a year, the local agency is short on frills. Kids who come to the programs bring their own therapy tools, but they don’t have many extras. "We have a lot of boys," says Director Diane Mathews, "but we don’t ever seem to have enough cars." This holiday season, the local Easter Seals Oregon chapter could use donations of toy cars or perhaps a train set in good condition. Electronic games and accessories are also welcome. (They have a few Game Boys, Mathews says, but not very many games.) To help, call Mathews at 842-2199.
