John Martin Roos was indicted Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Medford on 10 federal felony charges, including eight counts of threats against the president and two counts of threatening federal law enforcement agents. Roos allegedly made the threats on Twitter in March and also allegedly threatened to shoot FBI agents in posts on Facebook during the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge occupation near Burns, documents show. For each of the eight charges of threats against the president, Roos faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and fines of $250,000. For the two charges of threatening federal law enforcement officers, Roos faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and $250,000 fines each, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney William "Bud" Fitzgerald, who is prosecuting Roos' case. Court documents cite eight Twitter posts made between March 16-26, allegedly under his Twitter handle @indnjohnpatriot, and a Jan. 31 Facebook post threatening the FBI during the Malheur occupation. Two separate charges stem from a single March 19 tweet in which Roos allegedly threatened to kill the president and FBI agents. Court documents show the FBI first began investigating Roos in February after a concerned citizen submitted screenshots of Facebook and Twitter posts, including the Jan. 31 Facebook post cited in the indictment. An FBI agent questioned Roos March 25 at the Veterans Affairs' Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics in White City. Roos said his social-media posts are how he "blows off steam." Secret Service special agents contacted him March 30, and Roos allegedly told the agents he had made the posts, that he "can't help" how he feels, but that he doesn't have the physical ability to carry out his statements. The FBI arrested Roos April 28 after executing a search warrant at his Medford apartment at 1497 Poplar Drive, in which four illegal pipe bombs were found in a bucket, according to court documents. At least one of the pipe bombs had steel ball bearings taped to its exterior, the documents say. Roos allegedly told investigators the pipe bombs contained black powder, but denied that he had any blasting caps in the apartment. Inside the apartment, investigators also found an AK-47 mounted on the wall near the front door, a rifle and a shotgun in Roos' bedroom, and a Glock .45-caliber handgun concealed inside couch cushions in the living room, court documents state. Inside Roos' white Chevy S-10 pickup, which Roos consented to be searched, investigators found a loaded Kimber .45-caliber pistol under the driver's-side floor mat, according to the documents.
