Kyleen Johnson, Natalie Dicus and Melissa Gmur led the way for the Challengers, nabbing first-team accolades as each player paced Cascade in at least one statistical category. Lakeview also had three players named to the first team in seniors Liz Albertson and Maura Bradbury and junior Anneke Tucker, with Glendale’s Kaleigh Causey rounding out the list of first teamers. Over the course of the season, Johnson, a setter, posted 142 kills, 179 digs, 50 aces and a team-leading 428 assists. For her efforts, Johnson also earned the title of most valuable player in the SCL. "I think that (MVP) had to do with her whole year," said Challengers coach Susan Gmur, who was tabbed SCL coach of the year. "She was our leader and captain and a great kid. I think she deserved it." Advertisement Dicus, a senior outside hitter, led the Challengers on defense with 232 digs. Dicus also racked up 273 kills and 53 aces on the season. A 28-kill performance in the state tournament garnered her second-team all-tournament recognition. Melissa Gmur, the only non-senior starter for Cascade, had a season-best .233 hitting percentage. "She’s grown quite a bit this year," said coach Gmur of her daughter. "I think she’s put a lot of time and effort into it." Also honored for their exploits with the Challengers this season were seniors Audrey Holmes and Emily Overstreet, who each earned second-team acclaim. In the state tournament, a first-round loss to eventual runner-up Union put the Challengers in a tight spot. Cascade rebounded with victories over Culver and Myrtle Point to finish with a 2-1 record in pool play, but was eliminated from the tournament after a single-game loss to Myrtle Point. "We were really disappointed," said coach Gmur. "Sports teaches you a lot of things, and how to handle adversity is one of them." The Challengers graduate eight players and will return only two varsity members for 2005, but Gmur is optimistic about the future at Cascade Christian. "We have a great program at the middle school," she said. "With the incoming middle schoolers and the JV team, we’ll be just fine." St. Mary’s was represented on the second team by Kelsey Reedy, the Crusaders’ only returning starter. The junior outside hitter led St. Mary’s in every category except blocks and assists during the season. Crusaders freshman Cynthia Naumes earned an honorable mention nod for her performance at setter. SCL Volleyball All-League FIRST TEAM Player Team Yr. Natalie Dicus Cas.
