Pacific Connector, in partnership with Jordan Cove, is promising jobs. Some of the jobs would be in construction, some in dredging the bay, using the enormous amounts of fill to raise the sandbar on which these buildings would sit to an above-tsunami level. From other such endeavors, we also know that most of these jobs would be filled by out-of-state workers, brought in by Pacific Connector. Although we may still trust corporations, they never reward our trust. Witness the recent report that the "millions of permanent jobs" promised for the Keystone pipeline have now been downgraded to 500 total. While trusting that good permanent jobs would be available, we would lose our thousands of agricultural jobs to industrial pollution. We would lose our fishing and shell-fishing jobs to dredging. As of the recent Oregon Blue Book's economic report (2011), Oregon's top commodities, valued at nearly $4 billion, are greenhouse/nurseries, hay, cattle, wheat, grass seed, potatoes, blueberries, corn and Christmas trees. We must have clean air and water to sustain agriculture and fisheries, our life's blood in these rural counties. Janet Ievins, Talent Act now; stand up In a letter to President Obama dated Nov. 7, Sen. Ron Wyden stated, “Climate change will have serious negative consequences on our economy, national security, health and on our budget … and we will need action to address this challenge.” Act now and stand up against the Jordan Cove Project. This project would build a 230-mile pipeline to transport fracked natural gas through Southern Oregon to Coos Bay, where it would be shipped to Asian markets. We need to demand that our leaders start replacing words with actions and stop approving dirty energy projects. We need to use our imagination and join others in developing more sustainable and safe job opportunities in areas such as renewable energy, health care and education. We need to put our children, grandchildren and communities in the front and center of this conversation, ahead of corporate profit. Get off the sidelines and raise your voice for a faster transition to cleaner energy.  Della Merrill, Ashland Resource liquidation sale With money they have banked over the last 30 years producing almost everything we touch and previously manufactured for ourselves, the Chinese have been buying large numbers of residential properties and commercial real estate from Seattle to San Diego. Now preparations are being made to sell off our coal, oil and our natural gas supply to the Asians. Why are we doing this? Once accomplished, our fate is sealed. Led to believe that more domestic drilling and mining for fuels would provide lower energy prices, we overlooked the environmental devastation that results. Now, as we are about to realize the price reduction, the industry has decided to export everything, escalating prices. Please, take the longer view. Does the money offered to Coos County to allow the export of natural gas compensate the American people for our ruin? Only China is served by this energy policy. Maybe, after they have developed their resources in the Gobi Desert, when our supply dwindles, China may sell us gas. If they ever get done rolling on the floor and laughing at us.
