I’ve been flying our flag since Sept. 11 and it’s getting pretty worn. What do I do with it? — Patty G., Medford We went straight to the source on this one, Patty. The U.S. Flag Code states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning." Unfortunately, the code, which was adopted by Congress to become federal law in 1942, doesn’t spell out other dignified methods to dispose of Old Glory once it becomes faded and worn. Perhaps the code is seen as quaint by some of today’s flag- wavers, but alert readers, particularly incensed veterans, call in periodically with complains that the flag is being mistreated. Consider some of the highlights of the code: When the flag becomes tattered or torn, it should be carefully repaired or replaced. Advertisement The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding or drapery. The flag should be flown from sunrise to sundown only, unless there is adequate illumination by a spotlight or similar light at night. The flag should never be used as a banner, bunting or covering, except when displayed on caskets at certain funerals.
