Jose Raphael Ramirez was arraigned this afternoon on charges of first-degree robbery and second-degree robbery, stemming from a March 25 indictment in connection with the February 2014 robbery of the Astro station on East Main Street. Jackson County sheriff's deputies took custody of Ramirez, 45, Wednesday evening after he was extradited from California, where he had been held in the Pomona County Jail since his arrest April 22. Ashland police had arrested Francisco Javier Mercado-Chavez July 21 in connection with the robbery, after receiving a Crimestoppers tip, according to documents filed in Jackson County Circuit Court. According to prosecutors, Mercado-Chavez was said to have been in possession of the clothing worn during the robbery. Prosecutors later dismissed their case against Mercado-Chavez in August after the investigation revealed insufficient evidence to support his prosecution, court documents said. Police said a bearded man wearing a black beanie and black hooded sweatshirt walked into the gas station shortly before 8:30 p.m. Feb. 8, asking the clerk for cigarettes before tapping a handgun in his waistband and demanding money. The suspect then fled across Lithia Way with more than $1,300 in cash, according to court documents. First-degree robbery and second-degree robbery are both Measure 11 crimes, carrying minimum prison sentences of 90 months and 70 months, respectively, upon conviction.
