CRIME Police say man admits to 50 vehicle thefts in Rogue Valley By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 16, 2015 @ 3:31 pm By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Posted Oct. 16, 2015 @ 3:31 pm » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> A Grants Pass man who police say admitted to stealing 50 vehicles in Southern Oregon over the past year was arraigned today on six charges related to thefts in Medford. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department arrested 25-year-old Gregory Ryan Taylor in Eagle Point Wednesday following a car chase. Since then, Medford police have accused him of being involved in a spree that started last March, with thefts of numerous 1990s model Jeep Cherokees and Wranglers, along with '90s model Hondas. "It was a pretty significant arrest for us,” said Lt. Mike Budreau of Medford police. "This is a guy we’ve been looking for for a long time." A probable cause affidavit says Taylor admitted to six car thefts in Medford from early June to mid-September, and that he estimated stealing as many as 50 across Jackson and Josephine counties over the past year. Investigators believe Taylor used shaved keys, or keys that are altered to fit multiple locks, to get inside the vehicles. In August, a passerby snapped a photo of a man police believe is Taylor as he tried several keys on a Jeep parked at Winco. After failing to open the door, the man walked off, which is when the passerby took the picture. Surveillance video later showed that same man, who wore a red shirt and red San Francisco 49ers flat brimmed ball cap, getting into another Jeep and driving away. Tips on the man's identity started rolling in after police shared that photo on their Facebook and Twitter accounts, with many of them pointing to Taylor. A probable cause affidavit alleges that Taylor was part of a group that broke into a Gold Hill home in August, making off with thousands of dollars in property, including a rifle. On Wednesday, Taylor was apprehended by officers following a chase in a car and on foot through Eagle Point. Taylor was arraigned in Jackson County Circuit Court today on six counts of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, two counts of attempt to elude, two counts of first-degree theft and a count of first-degree burglary, along with a several additional misdemeanor crimes such as criminal trespass and reckless driving. He remained in the Jackson County Jail with no bail. Court records show Taylor has three additional open cases dating to May 2014, with indictments for first-degree theft, possession of heroin, possession of methamphetamine and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
