South softball wins again KLAMATH FALLS � South Medford won its second straight non-conference softball game in less-than-ideal conditions Saturday when the Panthers pounded out 14 hits in building a 9-1 lead en route to a 9-5 victory over Mazama. Michelle Blum went 4-for-5, scored two runs and drove in another, while Lindsey McHenry continued to hit the ball hard, spanking a pair of triples. Sophomore right-hander Darci Byrne allowed just one run until the seventh inning in picking up her second win. "Mazama always hits the ball. If you don�t stay sharp they can do that to you," South Medford coach Duke Mondale said. "Darci was cruising, but she may have lost a little of her concentration after we scored two runs in the top of the seventh to make it 9-1." Mickey Conley poked her first home run of the spring, socking a two-out pitch to left field for a solo home run in the first inning. She finished 2-for-4, scored twice and had two RBIs. McHenry drove in one run and scored twice, while Byrne aided her cause with three hits. "We had a lot of kids gone for different reasons, but the kids that were here did a great job today," Mondale said. KLAMATH UNION 1-1 � At Redmond, the Panthers pounded out 11 hits in the first game and then took advantage of a pair of three-run innings in the second game to sweep the Pelicans. Katie Schulte paced three hits in the first game. Klamath Union�s Stephanie Warner doubled in the sixth inning and scored her team�s only run on an error in the first game. Tashina Skeen singled and scored on a seventh-inning wild pitch in the second game. Derschon (4) and Sconce. Baseball ASHLAND WINS TITLE � At Etna, Calif., Ashland capped a perfect weekend with two more victories over California teams to claim the Etna Tournament title. The Grizzlies beat Trinity, 12-1 in five innings, and Yreka, 9-3 in six innings, to complete a three-game sweep in the round-robin tournament. Mike Allen belted a solo homer and went 3-for-4 with three RBIs against Trinity, then handcuffed Yreka with his pitching in the nightcap. Jayson Schroeder struck out eight to earn the victory against Trinity, allowing only three hits in five innings. Titus Weston, Arin Rouse and Ryan Decker each had two hits to pace the Grizzlies (3-0). Decker and Bill Rowe each added two hits against Yreka, which committed seven errors in the game shortened by darkness. Milke, a catcher and the No. 9 hitter in the Loggers� lineup, broke open a tight game in the fourth inning when he spanked a two-run single that increased Eureka�s lead to 6-2. Tennis GRANTS PASS SPLITS TWO GAMES � At Coos Bay, Ariel Siemens picked up the lone singles win for Grants Pass in a 8-1 loss to Marshfield on Saturday. The Cavers bounced back later in the day with a 7-2 victory over North Bend to improve to 1-1 on the season.
