An anonymous tip led detectives to the Talent home of the 21-year-old man, Ashland police Sgt. Jim Alderman said in a news release. The man’s name was not released by police. Just after 10 p.m. Friday, an Ashland police officer saw the man’s Honda racing a Chevy Blazer along North Main Street. The officer tried to stop both vehicles, but only the Honda pulled to the side of the road. The Blazer swerved through traffic at a high speed until it collided head-on with a Nissan Sentra driven by Leah Castillo, 18, of Talent, police said. Castillo was killed. The Honda left the scene before the officer returned to the spot where it had been stopped, police said. Castillo died at the scene of the crash. She graduated Friday night from Ashland High School, and was headed to an all- night graduation party when the wreck occurred. The Blazer’s driver, Jonathan Guevarra, 19, of Eagle Point, suffered a broken ankle in the crash and remains hospitalized in fair condition at Rogue Valley Medical Center, a nursing supervisor said. Advertisement Guevarra has not been charged with a crime. Ashland police are working with Jackson County prosecutors during their investigation, Detective Brent Jensen said. Police found beer cans outside the Blazer following the crash. Jensen on Tuesday declined to release results of a preliminary blood test that shows whether Guevarra was drinking Friday night. It is not known if the Honda’s driver is acquainted with Guevarra. Jensen said Tuesday that investigators presumed the men knew each other. Alderman said no charges are pending against the Talent man.
