Felicia Krystal Burton, 27, admitted Tuesday in Jackson County Circuit Court that she held her 3-year-old daughter's hands and arms under hot running water as punishment because the child had made a mess in her pants that spread to the floor on Sept. 23, 2014. Burton waited a day before taking her daughter to Valley Immediate Care for treatment of her injuries and provided a false explanation for the burns, according to court documents. The child was rushed to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center by ambulance, then transported to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland to address deep burns to her arms and fingertips. A doctor at Legacy Emanuel described the burns the child suffered as life-threatening because of a high risk of infection. A Court Appointed Special Advocate for the child, who declined to give her name to a reporter, told Circuit Judge Lorenzo Mejia that the child is recovering from her physical injuries better than doctors had anticipated, saying that protective creams and ointments have stemmed the need for skin grafts. The advocate said the child still shows signs of nerve damage and sensitivity between her fingers because of the burn. In a letter read to the court, the advocate said that beyond the child's physical injuries are deep emotional scars. The advocate described a recent incident in which mandatory shots for school terrified the child, who screamed and cowered. "I don't like shots," the child said, according to the advocate. "They gave me lots of shots when Mom Felicia burned my skin." Until the incident, eight children lived in the home with Burton and her partner, Brian Dale Schott, who also faces a felony charge of abuse. A foster mother for another child who lived in the home also addressed the court. The night of the burn, when the 3-year-old screamed in pain, Burton and Schott told her to "shut up," the foster mother said. She described punishments that included forcing children to sleep on concrete without blankets. She said her foster son's post-traumatic stress is triggered by "just about anything" and that the boy will take only cold showers since the burn incident. "He doesn't even like his food very hot," said the foster mother, who also declined to provide her name. Burton, of the 100 block of Kenwood Avenue, was sentenced to 70 months in prison and three years of post-prison supervision after pleading guilty to second-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment. She will serve her sentence beginning Wednesday. Burton declined to address the court after sentencing, but appeared emotional, turning to defense attorneys Jeni Feinberg and Justin Rosas for comfort. Feinberg said Burton feels remorse for what happened. Although she admitted it doesn't excuse what happened to the children, Burton was a victim of abuse herself. "There's nothing you can say to excuse it, and she's never tried to," Feinberg said. Court records show that Burton has a 2010 prior felony conviction in Jackson County for stealing her grandmother's car. Schott faces a felony charge of first-degree criminal mistreatment.
