It's been clear ever since Ted Cruz dropped out of the race back on May 4th that Trump would go on to win the GOP nomination, a once unthinkable feat, but this week he made it official: After winning Washington state's primary on Tuesday, the Associated Press declared him the winner. It's been clear ever since Ted Cruz dropped out of the race back on May 4th that Trump would go on to win the GOP nomination, a once unthinkable feat, but this week he made it official: After winning Washington state's primary on Tuesday, the Associated Press declared him the winner. The internet was already buzzing about his much-ballyhooed interview with Jimmy Kimmel once the announcement was made, in which he made quite the declaration. That left not a whole lot of room for the other presidential contenders to grab headlines, especially after riots broke out at rallies from New Mexico to California. Here are five things to know for the week of May 23rd in case you missed it: 1. Not all is well in Election Land Crowds strife with conflict were the focus of several riots that turned violent outside of Donald Trump rallies throughout the week, and in the most egregious cases participants were met by large forces of police as they attempted to burn cars and break glass. Hong) On the lighter side of dark and in an encouraging sign that may signal a yearning for better understanding of the other side, reports came out of Trump supporters showing up peacefully to Bernie rallies and vice versa. 2. Donald Trump agrees to debate Bernie Sanders on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' Kimmel, who jokingly threw his name into the ring for VP picks, must get some sort of award for conversationalist of the week after stoking the fires that led to Trump acknowledging a debate with Sanders could only be one thing: yuuuuuge . 3. Bernie Sanders agreed to debate Donald Trump And if that clip were't enough to whet your debate whistle, the Sanders campaign has done everything it can to ensure that a prime time debate definitely happens. “Our campaign and the Trump campaign have received two offers by broadcast television networks to host the Sanders-Trump debate that we suggested. Both offers include a major contribution to charity," Sanders said in a statement on Friday. 4. Sanders concedes Kentucky After asking for a recount in the state, where he split the delegates evenly in a contest Clinton was expected to win by a wide margin, election officials found that Clinton had beaten him by 1,911 votes. That he was a thorn in Kentucky's side is no coincidence, as the biggest election in the primary is coming up on June 7 when 784 delegates are up for grabs, and he would like to frame the narrative as being on a winning streak. Sanders currently trails Clinton in pledged delegates by about 4 percent. 5. Trump releases his energy 'plan' Although social media was relatively quiet after the big announcement, with Americans set to celebrate Memorial Day weekend, Trump caused some waves with pundits on Friday afternoon after releasing his America First energy plan while campaigning in oil-rich North Dakota. The "proposal" would rip up the Paris climate agreement and free the oil & gas industry from regulatory hurdles meant to throttle its mining efforts. The proposal caused confusion among some energy experts, while the Democrats were quick to scoff at the idea.
