Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov denounced the cartoons as “vulgar and immoral” while addressing the crowd. On Jan. 7, two gunmen with connections to al-Qaida stormed into the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo and killed 12 people. “You and I see how European journalists and politicians under false slogans about free speech and democracy proclaim the freedom to be vulgar, rude and insult the religious feelings of hundreds of millions of believers,” Kadyrov said. The magazine published another issue a week later with an image of Muhammad on the cover. In Islam, images of the prophet are considered sacrilegious, so the new cover, despite its peaceful message, was seen by some people as another sign of disrespect. SURVEY SAYS A recent survey of British citizens by YouGov found that nearly half of the survey’s respondents hold some anti-semitic views.
