Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jul. 1, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News July 1, 1915 HOTTEST WEATHER OF THE YEAR HERE The hottest weather of the season is being experienced over the Rogue River valley today and Wednesday, when the mercury rose over the 100 mark. Wednesday the temperature rose to 101, and at noon today the mercury registered 99 degrees with the probability that it will be equal or exceed the season's high-water mark. The weather report for tonight is probably cooler. The United States weather bureau at Washington, D.C., in its holiday prediction for Oregon, forecasts showers for July. Wednesday night the minimum temperature was 64 degrees. The heat is fine for the corn, but that is about all. Editorial: NEGLECTED OPPORTUNITIES There is a good market for all the berries, cherries, small fruits, beans and vegetables that can be grown in the valley. These crops have been neglected because no effort has previously been made for marketing. This year, however, the Rogue River Fruit & Produce association has enlarged its field of operations and is marketing all crops. In addition, there is a commission house that cannot secure produce needed. Orders for peas and beans, for cherries and berries remain unfulfilled for lack of produce. One order for fifty crates a day of blackberries for three months remains unfilled because there are not that many blackberries grown in the valley. Local canneries are unable to operate continuously because of lack of product. Although canneries are willing to enter into contracts with growers upon an acreage basis, sufficient acreage cannot be secured. There are thousand of acres of idle land too shallow for orchards, but ideal for berries. All they require is a minimum amount of care and water. The Fruit association has marketed seven or eight tons of cherries at satisfactory prices. W.E. Phipps, owner of the Gold Bottom cherry orchard at Gold Hill, says there is more money in cherries than in any other fruit, and has the figures to prove it. Rogue River valley cherries stand shipment better than any grown elsewhere, in proof of which he shows figures realized on fruit shipped as far east as New York, where the cherries topped the market.
