Crater (6-1 overall, 1-0 Southern Oregon Conference) pushed the ball into the North Medford box 15 minutes into the second half, and the Black Tornado was called for a handball, setting up Sesock’s goal. The Crater senior beat the keeper to give the Comets a 2-1 lead, which proved to be the margin of victory. "We outshot them 17-7 and had some opportunities to take them out early," first-year Crater head coach Chris Gallegos said. "We’ve been working blood, sweat and tears with conditioning since the first day of practice. I thought my stopper, Eric Hangartner, played the game of his life." North Medford head coach Rich Garcia agreed that Hangartner was the man of the match. "I thought Crater played a good game," Garcia said. "Hangartner was amazing. He was in the middle, disrupting all the offense. "We had chances to win, but Crater won it. My hat’s off to them." Jay DeLamora gave the Comets the early lead, 1-0, with a goal off an assist by John Bowers in the 35th minute. North Medford (2-6, 0-1) evened the match in the second half when Jorge Castro scored in the 50th minute off a throw-in from Todd Rufener. Crater broke the deadlock five minutes later, ending the Tornado’s reign over the Comets. "This was a big win for us," Gallegos said. "We’ve been working hard and preparing, and I think the team is starting to come together." SOUTH MEDFORD 10, EAGLE POINT 1 — At Eagle Point, Daniel Hathaway, Jon Klenke and Corey O’Neill netted two goals apiece to pace South Medford. The Panthers (5-1-1, 1-0) cruised to a 7-0 halftime lead and also got goals from Ryan Wallenberg, Josh Williams, Josh Bell and David Lane. Lane, Wallenberg and Klenke added assists, and Geordan Neville and Mike Belzberg split time, as usual, in South’s goal. Eagle Point (1-6, 0-1) scored when Javier Aispura knocked in a pass from Julio Malgarego. ASHLAND 6, GRANTS PASS 1 — At Ashland, Matt Sharp scored two goals as Ashland opened SOC play with a win. Rick Ferguson started the scoring in the fifth minute and Sharp tacked on two more in the 22nd and 31st minutes. Alex Christlieb, Fabian Garcia-Flores and Will Fain each had second-half goals. Josh Swanburg tallied the lone goal for Grants Pass. KLAMATH UNION 5, ROSEBURG 0 — At Roseburg, Ricardo Guerrero upped his goal total to 13 on the season with a pair of scores in defending SOC champion Klamath Union’s conference-opening win. Guerrero put Klamath up 1-0 just three minutes in off an assist from Tyler Casey. Drew Baldwin assisted on Ebby Barajas’ goal in the 30th minute, and Guerrero made it 3-0 three minutes later. Casey added a goal and another assist in the second half, and Barajas capped the scoring in the 61st minute. The Pelicans (4-2, 1-0) outshot the Indians, 22-6. Girls SOUTH MEDFORD 4, EAGLE POINT 0 — South Medford sophomore Emma McConnell scored two goals, including a header off a corner kick from Courtney Quinowski, to lead the Panthers in an SOC-opening shutout over Eagle Point at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. McConnell scored in the 11th minute with a header off the corner kick and again in the 39th minute with an assist from Amber Stevens. South Medford (5-1-1, 1-0), which led 3-0 at the intermission, also had goals from Amber Stevens (ninth minute) and freshman Katrina Stevens (57th). ASHLAND 1, GRANTS PASS O, Shootout — At Grants Pass, Ashland received penalty-kick goals from Danya Rose-Merkle, Sylvia VanAusdal and Rachel Salem in the shootout to avenge an earlier, 2-0 non-conference loss to Grants Pass. Ashland made three-of-four kicks in the shootout and didn’t have to take its fifth shot when Grants Pass missed its final attempt. The Cavers, who shot first, missed their first two attempts, converted their next two and missed the fifth. Katie Lamont and Tina Warnick converted penalty kicks for Grants Pass. Ashland goalkeeper Chloe Hansen had a strong game in net as did her Grants Pass counterpart, Karyne Sander. KLAMATH UNION 5, ROSEBURG 2 — At Klamath Falls, sophomore forward Claire Edwards scored three goals and Brianne Hackett added one goal and two assists for Klamath Union (3-3, 1- 0). The Pelicans grabbed a 2-0 halftime lead. Jenna Fay scored KU’s opening goal on an assist from Hackett at the seventh minute. At the 38th minute, Edwards scored unassisted.
