PREP SWIMMING: Ashland boys nearly sweep meet By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Dec 16, 2022 10:59 PM A A EUGENE — Ashland posted a champion in all but one boys race for an impressive swimming victory Friday afternoon at Echo Hollow pool in a four-team meet hosted by Churchill that included Crater and Eagle Point. Junior swimmers Ben Caron and Aiden Espinoza each scored a pair of individual victories for the Grizzlies, who scored 327 points to hold off runner-up Churchill (277). Caron touched first in the 100 freestyle in 56.83 seconds and also won the 100 breaststroke in 1 minute, 13.76 seconds. Espinoza placed first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.70) and 100 backstroke (1:06.13). Eagle Point’s Ian Isackson broke up the Ashland boys’ stronghold on first place in the 50 free, winning in 27.82 ahead of teammate Alex Whitlow (29.07). In the girls meet, Ashland senior Amelia Mercado was able to break through for a pair of wins in action dominated by Churchill, which won going away with 462 points. The Grizzlies, who also got a win from Lillian Keller in the 100 free (1:05.68), finished second with 165 points. Mercado won the 200 free (2:19.71) and 100 breaststroke (1:19.45). SOUTH SPLITS: At Grants Pass, South Medford battled neck-and-neck with Grants Pass in a three-way meet with Phoenix, with the Panther boys edging the Cavemen, 78-76, but the South girls unable to secure a sweep in an 82-80 setback in final score to host GP at the Grants Pass YMCA. South Medford’s Joseph Schoenhals won the 100 free (56.79) and 500 free (6:25.43) to help lead the charge for the boys team, with Benji Krebs winning the 50 free in 24.81 and Cole Schiffer touching first in the 100 breast (1:04.39). Ellie Carson also picked up a pair of wins for the South girls (200 free and 500 free), while Jazmin Elwood (200 I.M.) and Tawan Buranathamawat (100 back) were also victorious.
