The "Looking at compensation for wolf kills" article published Feb. 3 quotes rancher Dalton Straus: "They are the most devastating, meanest, orneriest animal on the planet. They kill to eat and also kill to play." He is, of course, referring to humans, correct? Eric Cislo , Ashland Minorities can be right Polls and opinion columns do not identify the truth. Valid science is not done by vote. If minorities often use silly arguments, that does not make minority opinion wrong. If a scientific majority uses convincing arguments, that does not make the arguments right. If 86 percent favor mandatory vaccination, what about the few who actually study effectiveness and safety? Is it possible that the Cochrane Collaboration uses better science than Wyeth, and NVIC is less prejudiced than Offitt? It was quite recently that nearly all scientists believed that saturated fat caused heart disease. That is changing because of a very few who objected to that error, not because they had access to better science, but because they followed research, not the crowd. I try to get information, if I can, from sources that study various questions on an issue and use actual scientific method, rare as that is. For myself, I never get a flu shot, and I am safer from illness than those who do. I believe that vaccines with mercury or aluminum adjuvants should not be used. My belief does not make it true. Good science makes it likely. Ira Edwards , Medford Don't pay ranchers From nursery stories like Little Red Riding Hood to tales of werewolves, the wild wolf has received tons of bad press for millennia. It’s a wonder that any survive, and, in fact, wolves were nearly exterminated from the lower 48 states by 1960. But the pendulum began to swing in 1974 when the gray wolf was listed as an endangered species and efforts began to re-introduce wolves into the wilder portions of America. Many people began to see the wolf as a natural part of the wilderness environment. But ranchers were not happy to see this happen, and they have been “crying wolf” ever since — despite the fact that statistically wolves are responsible for a very small percentage of livestock deaths. Taxpayers don’t reimburse cattlemen when cows die by accident or disease, so why should we reimburse them for wolf depredation, also a natural cause? Search “statistics: livestock depredation by wolves United States” and you’ll see how low the wolf-kill stats are. While you’re at it, watch the documentary film “OR-7: The Journey” at www.or7themovie.com. Then tell the Jackson County commissioners we won’t ever need a program to reimburse ranchers for cattle deaths by any natural cause. Allen Hallmark , Talent Camelot show sparkles On Feb. 4, I attended Camelot Theatre’s production of “A Question of Words.” Livia Genese chose well, this 2013 ANPF pick's world premiere in Talent! Following the sold-out Roy Orbison Spotlight, our jewel of a theater is keeping the momentum going. From the music that greeted me on entering the lobby to Sinatra singing “New York, New York,” I was in! I was captivated by the stage setting that invited me into the play as the audience assembled. In her opening greeting, Livia told us that the playwright, Richard Manley, was in the audience, and that, too, added an additional point of interest for me. What would it be like to see his words take shape and life? Two veteran actors of Camelot, Barbara Henson and Roy Von Rains Jr., each gave, in my opinion, one of the best performances I’ve seen them do. The entire cast, in addition to Barbara and Roy — Pam Ward, Buzz London, Rose Passione and AJ Falk, brought the words in question to life in a way that mattered. There is humor, innuendo and grammatical education in the cozy setting we’ve come to know here in Camelot. Thank you all!
