Pacific Highway Cost: $150 for the black-tie gala, $50 for the holiday party, $5 or $3 for the tour For reservations: Call 541-732-5193 For more information: See http://oregon.providence.org/our-services/p/providence-festival-of-trees-medford » Social News A tree sparkling with crystals against a palette of silver and chrome will be a beacon for breast-cancer survivors at Providence Medford Medical Center’s annual holiday benefit. “Shine on” is Crystal Stiles’ motto and the inspiration for Crystal Courage, a highlight of the 2015 Providence Festival of Trees happening Wednesday through Sunday, Dec. 2-6, at the Medford Armory. Designed with Amanda Hall, the tree is “just over the top,” says Stiles, a breast-cancer survivor. “I don’t think Festival of Trees has ever seen a tree like this,” says the 45-year-old Gold Hill resident. “It just shines.” Especially appealing to anyone battling cancer, the tree comes with gift certificates for housekeeping, Natural Grocers, an Oregon Coast getaway, eyelash extensions, tattooing and a plastic-surgery consultation, Stiles says. She and Hall, a 36-year-old Medford resident, strung the boughs with thousands of white lights and hundreds of antique-looking, crackled-glass ornaments, along with a few pink accents. Crystal Courage is earmarked with two other trees to raise funds for three specific causes at this year’s event, says Katie Shepherd, executive director of Providence Community Health Foundation. With the foundation as the fundraiser’s overall recipient, Mother Gamelin Charity Care and Swindells Resource Center are the other, special beneficiaries. At least 35 large trees, 20 tabletop tannenbaums and 15 to 20 miniature trees, holiday mantelpieces and wreaths constitute the Armory’s festive forest, Shepherd says. Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland and Mickey and Minnie Mouse are just a few of the whimsical themes, she says, among a host of “pretty, elegant, very traditionally decorated trees.” “I think people are going to walk in and be wowed, just like last year.” A Disney tree and entertainment tree return as popular raffle items, Shepherd says. New to this year’s raffle, she adds, is a locally made, handcrafted dollhouse that was in hot demand at previous years’ auctions. Most trees go up for live and silent auction at the festival’s black-tie gala, to be held from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2. There will be a champagne reception and silent auction followed by dinner and a live auction. Reservations to the gala cost $150. Call 541-732-5193. Previous festival beneficiaries include Providence’s interventional recovery unit, palliative care, Spine Institute, BirthPlace, Carl Brophy Stroke Program and the da Vinci robotic surgical system. The 2014 festival raised $523,000, the highest total in six years and the 12th consecutive year that proceeds exceeded $400,000. Exceeding organizers’ expectations, the Teddy Bear Hospital has been a beloved tradition since its 2013 debut for children 12 and younger. Kids run a full checkup on their stuffed companions using an X-ray image box to see its heart and a broken bone for bandaging. The nonthreatening, “no-poke” environment is staffed by real doctors, nurses and care providers. Bears also will be available for purchase for $5. “They have a ball getting their teddy bear checked up,” Shepherd says. Children’s visits with Santa Claus are free of charge during all hours of the festival’s public events. Photography with personal cameras is permitted; professional photos with Santa cost $5 apiece. About 20,000 adults and kids attend the festival over its five-day run, Shepherd says. Extending the merrymaking of the Opening Night Gala, the Holiday Party, from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, costs $50 in advance or at the door. The evening of food, wine and beer also features raffle drawings, music and dancing. Musical entertainment sets the tone for each day of public viewing, courtesy of local school and community bands, choirs and dance troupes. Admission is $5, $3 for seniors 60 and older and children 12 and younger. Seniors get in free on Friday, kids on Sunday.
