COLLEGES Embattled Michigan athletic director steps down By Detroit Free Press MailTribune.com By Detroit Free Press Posted Nov. 1, 2014 @ 12:43 am By Detroit Free Press Posted Nov. 1, 2014 @ 12:43 am » Social News After weeks of intense speculation and fan agitation, Dave Brandon is no longer the athletic director at the University of Michigan. He submitted his resignation on Wednesday. U-M President Mark Schlissel accepted it and announced the move Friday afternoon, along with the appointment of businessman Jim Hackett as the interim director of athletics. “Dave feels that it would be in the best interest of our student-athletes, the athletic department and the university community if he moved on to other challenges and allowed the important work of the department and university to continue without daily distractions,” Schlissel said during a press conference held at the university’s administration building. “And I agree with this decision.” Brandon will be paid $3 million in severance, plus the university will not say anything bad about him. He agrees not to say anything bad about them as well. Students were pleased and surprised by the news. “During the last month, we’ve done great work with Dave,” said student body President Bobby Dishell, who attended the press conference. “I think there was a real effort to heal the relationship with students — but obviously too little too late.” U-M senior Mike Walsh, 22, said he’s glad Brandon was out. “He seemed to be all about the dollar and forgot the traditions here,” he said while taking a study break Friday afternoon. “I hope whoever is next doesn’t do that.” Schlissel said Hackett will help with the search for a permanent replacement for Brandon. “I am confident that Jim will immediately begin the process of moving the department forward, including working closely with me to develop a plan to identify and recruit Michigan’s next permanent athletic director,” Schlissel said. “Jim is a highly experienced and respected business leader, a man of integrity, and a devoted member of our Michigan community.” Hackett is a former Michigan athlete who made his name as the CEO of Grand Rapids-based Steelcase. The Board of Regents will have to approve the move during its meeting in November. He also serves on the board of Ford Motor Co. He was a football teammate of Brandon’s under legendary coach Bo Schembechler during the 1970s. “This is a time for alumni to remember what has been special in their lives at this university,” Hackett said. “Michigan has a stellar record of performance academically and athletically.” Schlissel touted the efforts of Brandon in areas other than athletics, noting his donations to the hospital and his time as a regent. “During his nearly 5 years as our AD, he worked to ensure their well-being and their academic and athletic success, with programs and facilities that helped them grow as individuals and teammates and to succeed as students. For many years, Dave’s commitment to Michigan has touched many other parts of the university as well. “There is no doubt that Dave loves the University of Michigan.” Brandon has been under intense criticism for what many fans saw as misfired marking efforts that cheapened the storied Michigan sports tradition and couldn’t overcome that. Some students, alumni and fans — growing more vocal by the month — have been upset with Brandon for some time. A survey of students early this month suggested that his relationship with them was irreparable. This week, the official alumni association ran a web post on its site rounding up comments critical of Brandon. And fans renewed their calls for his head after a popular blog reported this week on several rude e-mails it said were sent by Brandon to fans. It also appears Brandon has lost the support of major donors as well. Stephen Ross, the biggest donor to the athletic department, appeared to back track earlier this week on previous comments supporting Brandon when he told the Wall Street Journal that he would not stand in the way of Brandon’s departure. Schlissel said he is working to re-establish the connection between fans, alumni, students and the athletic department. “To our alumni and others in the Michigan family, I want you to know that we are working to establish the right balance between academics, the competitiveness of our athletic programs, their financial stability and the athletic traditions we hold dear,” Schlissel said. The majority of the eight-member Board of Regents favored firing Brandon, with only the board’s two Republicans supporting Brandon. Before he became athletic director, Brandon, 62, was a prominent Republican who served one-term as a regent and was considered a possible strong candidate for governor. The tensions between board members and Brandon came to a head during a July board meeting when he asked for approval to shoot fireworks at games at Michigan Stadium. Board members took turns criticizing the move, saying it was cheapening the traditional game-day experience. Board members were also upset Brandon did not show up for the public portion of the meeting, instead having a university facilities employee answer questions. Multiple board members lobbied Schlissel to fire Brandon. Andrea Fischer Newman, a Republican board member, was on the opposite side. She told the news media after this month’s regents meeting she thought Brandon was doing a good job when looking at the totality of the department, Schlissel downplayed the role of politics in Brandon’s departure. “Politics has absolutely nothing to do with how an athletic department is run, at least not in my book,” he said. Instead, Schlissel returned several times to themes of athletics having the proper place in the university setting, something he clearly thought was lacking under Brandon. “Our mission as a university is to transform lives through education,” Schlissel said. “There are many other aspects of the community that bind us together. Athletics are one of those.
