Alan Bates. A resident of the Talent area, Moro joins Joyce Segers, Stacy Bannerman, Mike Moran, Kevin Stine, Kevin Talbert and Dr. Richard Schaefer in vying for the seat. Bates, who died Aug. 5, was known for his work in health care and human services. His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at Southern Oregon University's Stevenson Union, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. In over two decades as a lawyer, Moro has practiced land-use law, constitutional law, municipal law, criminal defense appeals and business and real estate law. She also has worked on energy policy. Moro is chairwoman of the Rogue Valley Transportation District, a member of Medford Rotary Club, and serves on the Oregon Public Transportation Plan Policy Advisory Committee, and on the board for OnTrack. In her time at OnTrack, she worked on issues relating to mental health and family services. The organization collaborated with Bates for policy reform. In addition, she has supported legislation for clean energy, helped found the Rogue Climate, an organization for community unity on clean energy solutions, assisted the opposition to LNG pipelines and helped organize community forums around housing and poverty. "There are great folks stepping up," Moro says of her competition, "What does set me apart somewhat is demonstrated commitment to our community and advancing issues that we face as a small urban and rural area. I think it's urgent that we start moving forward with regards to these issues and making sure that we've got a budget for health care and for education, and moving forward on good transportation planning and urban planning and energy planning."
