The robbery occurred at the chain's location inside Elmer's Restaurant  at 2000 Biddle Road, Medford. Investigators say the man they ultimately identified as 31-year-old Mark Gabriel Aguirre of Medford walked in at 9:16 p.m., pointed a handgun at a clerk and demanded money. "The robber talked a lot during the robbery, was very aggressive, was threatening," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. "Sometimes (robbery suspects) are polite and calm; sometimes they do a note. This was one of the more aggressive ones where he wasn't just pointing the gun, but he was making aggressive statements to the lone clerk. The victim certainly believed he could have been shot or killed during the event if he didn't comply." The suspect demanded money from the cash register and safe. The clerk complied with both demands. The suspect then made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and was last seen running toward Food 4 Less nearby. No one was injured in the incident. Budreau said that once investigators had identified Aguirre as the suspect, they determined he was at a home in the 3800 block of Avenue A in White City on Tuesday afternoon. "We had a couple sheriff's deputies and several detectives who had the place surrounded," he said. "We actually had some officers with our SWAT team who were deploying, because he was a suspect in an armed robbery." Budreau said the home posed problems for police because it gave Aguirre a clear view of anyone approaching. "Right as we were preparing to approach the residence, (Aguirre) is able to get to his car and drive off," Budreau said. Two Jackson County sheriff's deputies pursued the car, which Budreau said traveled west on Avenue A a short distance away before Aguirre ditched the vehicle down a side street and fled through nearby backyards, jumping fences as he went. Budreau said one of the deputies was a K-9 unit who brought out his dog to help with the search, but that Aguirre was ultimately found by other officers within the perimeter, hiding not far from his vehicle in the shed of an abandoned home "Once he got that space, it looks like he just hunkered down," Budreau said. Following Aguirre's arrest, detectives recovered some of the stolen money along with a replica handgun. Aguirre is being held in the Jackson County Jail on charges of second-degree robbery, first-degree theft and a parole violation on a previous conviction for felony fourth-degree domestic assault. He's been denied bail because of the parole violation. Medford police reported on their Facebook page that the likelihood of being caught after an armed robbery is high.
