We cheered when he found a mate miles later, and when the first pups were born. Echo, named by school children, has a sadder story. Radio-collared in Wyoming, she roamed the Rockies to the Grand Canyon, the first wolf since the '40's. Echo was shot in central Utah, suggesting a trek of some 750 miles. Those who followed her travels were heartbroken. The story of Echo will be the story of indigenous wolves if Republican state lawmakers and Oregon Fish and Game have their way and remove the wolf from the endangered species list. Oregon has only 81 and can easily accommodate 1,450. As in the previous de-listing, agency decisions are influenced by the Cattleman's Association. The wolf survives a hard-scrabble life while keeping wild grazing populations in check, but it has no defense against a gun. Considering the large amounts of water and grain cattle consume and the methane they emit, all contributors to global warming, the harm the lobo does is comparatively minor. Save the wolf, write: odfw.commission @state.or.us Kathy Svendsen Grants Pass Disaster in the making It looks like Republicans are hell-bent on nominating Donald Trump, a foulmouthed bigot best known for hurling puerile insults at women, minorities and opponents. That so many Republicans take him seriously has made the GOP an object of ridicule. Party leaders know what a disaster his nomination would be, but it’s a disaster of their own making. For over seven years, the Republican noise machine has bombarded the airwaves with fear and loathing of Barack Hussein Obama, convincing the gullible that he’s destroying America. Now they feign dismay that Trump’s inflammatory message of fear, anger and hatred resonates with their brainwashed base. The front runner is a mirror, reflecting just how unhinged the Republican Party has become. If anything is destroying America, it’s the GOP’s divisive jihad against our president. In spite of their sabotage, the nation is far better off than it was before Obama took office. It would be even better if politicians dialed down the hostility and worked together on resolving serious issues. Affordable education, affordable health care and building infrastructure would benefit the country; banning Muslims, demonizing immigrants and building the Great Wall of Mexico will not. I have had the good fortune to work with Pam in human services for several years and the even greater good fortune to count her among my friends. I admire her intelligence, compassion, her interest in the issues that affect our region, her business expertise, her formidable energy and her integrity. I believe she will be a worthy and effective successor to Peter Buckley, as her involvement in the local political scene has already demonstrated.
