John Calvert Meyer, 25, was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to attempted first-degree robbery charges Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court. At about 3 a.m. March 15, Meyer robbed a juvenile with a BB gun that looked like a handgun in the 500 block of Edwards Street, according to police reports. The juvenile had approached a girl he recognized in a car and stopped to talk to her. Meyer, who was sitting in car's back seat, pointed the weapon at the teen victim and demanded his wallet, backpack and mobile phone. The victim complied and fled. On March 17, police recovered the phone following a fight at an apartment complex in the 300 block of Alice Street. When police arrived, several witnesses pointed to a car leaving the complex saying "that's him," according to archives. Witnesses were able to spot him in part because of his distinctive neck tattoos, police said. When police stopped the car, they found Meyer sitting in the passenger seat in possession of the stolen phone. In a court hearing via video conferencing from the Jackson County Jail, Meyer sat up straight as he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of attempted first-degree robbery. Court-appointed defense attorney Don Scales said Meyer has taken advantage of drug treatment programs offered at the jail, which Scales said has made a "substantial" change in Meyer's clarity of mind. Although Meyer won't get credit for treatment programs, Scales said he hopes Meyer will continue to take advantage of programs while in prison. After entering his guilty plea, Meyer apologized to the community for his crimes and thanked Scales. "It's nice that every once in a while they (court-appointed defense attorneys) get the recognition they deserve," Circuit Judge David Hoppe said. Hoppe sentenced Meyer to 24 months' prison with credit for time served and earned time, and three years' supervised probation. "It's your chance to make a change," Hoppe said.
