WILDFIRE Fire near Applegate Lake burns 8 acres Blaze contained after two hours Comment By Hannah Golden Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Hannah Golden Mail Tribune Posted Jul. 29, 2016 at 10:13 AM Updated Jul 29, 2016 at 4:53 PM By Hannah Golden Mail Tribune Posted Jul. 29, 2016 at 10:13 AM Updated Jul 29, 2016 at 4:53 PM » Social News A blaze consumed 8.4 acres of wildlands in the Applegate Valley Thursday evening. The Southwest District of Oregon Department of Forestry responded to reports of smoke around 6 p.m. and requested additional aircraft and ground crews. What authorities are calling the Strong Arm fire sparked about eight miles northeast of Applegate Lake and 13 miles southwest of Medford. It burned on U.S. Forest Service lands, but ODF crews helped contain the fire. ODF spokeswoman Melissa Cano said a fix-winged plane, an air tanker and two helicopters dropped retardant and water on the flames. She estimated there were 40 firefighters on the ground. The fire was contained within two hours. Cano said the burn did not threaten any homes or require evacuations and had little to no impact on Applegate Lake visitors. Cano said this is the largest burn the department has had since the 2016 fire season began June 3. Last year's fire season saw 347 acres burned in the Southwest district. As of Friday, 33 acres have burned so far. The state has seen a total 2,523 acres burned. "We're at a low number," Cano says. "Nothing's cooking yet." Fire danger is still at high but had not been elevated to extreme, despite a hot weekend forecast. "We are on standby today because we have triple digits today," Cano said Friday. Weather Service meteorologist Mike Petrucelli said temperatures are forecast to drop into the 90s this weekend. Though high temperatures and low humidity are prime conditions for fires, no lightning was forecast. The cause of Thursday's fire is still under investigation by the Forest Service.
