A police affidavit filed Monday in Jackson County Circuit Court states that Matthew Shawn Hannon, 28, admitted stabbing 45-year-old Frank Morgan Wheeler in the back with a folding knife while the two spent time together in the early-morning hours Saturday. Hannon was arraigned Monday afternoon on charges of murder, first-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault in connection with Wheeler's death. Hannon initially kept his head down and rubbed his right temple when he appeared before Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Kelly Ravassipour via videoconferencing from the Jackson County Jail. He was granted a public defender, ordered to appear again in court July 27 and returned to the jail without bail. Chief Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz said Hannon's case was set to be heard Tuesday by a Jackson County grand jury. He declined further comment on the case. Oregon law generally does not allow bail for murder defendants, who upon conviction face a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison under state sentencing guidelines. The affidavit states that Wheeler was injured when he was discovered at about 1:10 p.m. by a man in the 14000 block of East Evans Creek Road. Jackson County sheriff's deputies found Hannon Saturday night at his campsite off Queens Branch Road and arrested him. Court records show that Hannon was convicted on a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge after he was found wielding a hatchet and threatening to kill patrons at the Homestead Lounge in Rogue River. He was also convicted of various misdemeanor charges of fourth-degree assault and resisting arrest for threatening and grappling with police who were investigating separate reports of Hannon assaulting his mother in 2013 and 2014. At the time of his slaying, Wheeler was wanted for failing to appear in court on aggravated theft for allegedly stealing more than $90,000 in construction equipment and supplies from construction sites in early 2014. Sheriff's Lt. Christine Bronson declined to reveal any further information about the case and referred all inquiries to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office.
