Black Tornado continues to blow by foes Add a couple of more ones to No. 1 North Medford's list. The Black Tornado rolled to 13-0 and 12-0 wins Saturday in taking both ends of a Southern Oregon Conference softball doubleheader from Ashland at Fagone Field. Pitchers Steph Coe and Becky Walker blanked the Grizzlies with a pair of one-hitters as North boosted its SOC record to 8-0 and 15-1 overall. "It doesn't get much better than that," North Medford coach Larry Binney said. "It's not like we got lucky. We did some awfully good things. "We made some great plays, hit the ball very well and I was really pleased with our pitching. Megumi Hackett went into the hole at shortstop and made an ESPN-highlight type of play. Jenny Close made a couple of big-time plays on bunts and made a diving catch on one." Coe struck out seven and walked one in the opener. The only hit she allowed came in the second inning when Christina Cooley led off with a single. But Cooley was erased when Kristen Strait hit into a double play. The only other runner Coe allowed came in the third inning she walked Katie Ripberger. Kylie Allen singled, doubled, and tripled, got hit by a pitch and scored a run. Hackett scored twice and stole three bases. Erin Glantz drove in two runs with a pair of hits. Jenny Close walked twice stole two bases and scored twice. Jill Carrigan also drove in two runs. In the second game, Walker posted her seventh straight victory, allowing only a two-out, fifth-inning single to Ripberger. She struck out seven and walked none. Ashland's only other runner in the game came in the third inning when Emily Clason reached on a third-inning error. Glantz went 3-for-4, to finish the day 5-for-7 with five RBIs. Allen had two hits and scored twice, Coe had two hits, scored three runs and had two RBIs. Steph Adams drove in two runs with three hits. "The girls, right now, are very focused and taking care of business," Binney said. "They're doing the things they need to to make us a better team and get ready for the playoffs." CRATER 5-3, SOUTH MEDFORD 4-2 -- At Central Point, junior pitcher Andrea Perdue combined for 11 consecutive shutout innings and picked up victories in both ends of the SOC doubleheader. Perdue no-hit South with 10 strikeouts in a relief effort over the last five innings of the 12-inning opener. Then she continued her mastery with six shutout innings before the Panthers pushed across two unearned runs in the seventh inning of game 2. Crater (11-4, 7-1 SOC) won the first game when Laura Bowers opened the 12th with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and scored on an error. Addie Wiersma and Emily Wiley each had three hits for Crater in the first game. For South, Elizabeth Hamblin and Brook Herring had two hits apiece. In game 2, Becky Arreola's two-out, sixth-inning double scored Heather Quinn with what proved to be the winning run. Grants Pass scored seven runs on seven errors, two hits and a walk to take an 11-0 lead in the third inning of the opener. Junior Reshaun Lewis had a run-scoring triple in the inning. Mary Barbian singled home two runs in the fourth inning for the Cavers, who improved to 3-3 in the SOC and 11-3 overall. Klamath Union dropped to 0-8 in conference and 5-12 overall. ROSEBURG 3-11, EAGLE POINT 1-1 -- At Eagle Point, Roseburg jumped on Eagle Point early with seven first inning runs in the second game of a doubleheader to cruise to the 10-run victory. The Indians sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning and scored three runs before an out was recorded. The Eagles' (6-12, 2-6) Stephanie Presley singled home Alaina Corliss in the bottom of the sixth to account for the only Eagle Point run in the first game. Roseburg added one more in the top half of the seventh and then held on for the victory. Corliss led the Eagles, going 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple and an RBI. Michelle Hegele went 4-for-6 with three runs scored for the Indians.
