Saturday, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota torched the Cardinal for 343 yards of offense (258 passing, 85 rushing) and four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) as the Ducks won 45-16 in their Pac-12 showdown at Autzen Stadium. “I’ve been a broken record, I’ve thought he’s the best player in the nation the last three years,” Shaw said of the Oregon junior. “I don’t care what the stats say; when you watch him play there’s nothing he can’t do.” Shaw wasn’t the only one impressed with Mariota. “He’s an elite player,” Stanford linebacker A.J. Tarpley said. “He’s one of the best players in college football, we knew that coming in. We had our hands on him multiple times and we just couldn’t bring him down and couldn’t force them to get off the field. He made plays when he needed to.” Oregon also had Shaw’s vote to be one of the four teams in this year’s inaugural College Football Playoff. “I haven’t seen everybody, but they’re really, really good,” he said. “You could say in the last couple of years we’ve been evenly matched with us winning the last two. In this one, they were the better team.” SCHNEIDER SHINES: Aiden Schneider remained the Ducks placekicker for the second straight week and appears to be doing all he can to steal the job away from sophomore Matt Wogan. Schneider was good on all six of his extra-point attempts against the Cardinal and also kicked a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter. It was the longest field goal of the last two seasons for Oregon. The 6-foot-4 freshman walk-on from Grant High in Portland is now 2-for-2 on field goals and 20-for-21 on PATs this season. Wogan, who didn’t make the trip to California last weekend, was back in uniform against Stanford and handled kickoff duties. Wogan was a USA Today and Parade All-American while in high school in North Carolina. He is 4-for-6 on field goals this season, missing twice on kicks longer than 30 yards. He was 7-for-9 last season with a long of 39 yards. DARGAN’S A THIEF: Safety Erick Dargan tied his career record with his fifth interception of the season. The senior also had five in 13 games in 2012 and one last season. His pick on Saturday came on an overthrow by Stanford quarterback Kevin Hogan that was intended for receiver Devon Cajuste on the opening drive of the second half. Dargan caught it at the Oregon 1-yard line and deftly keep his feet inbounds. In the fourth quarter, Dargan was in on another turnover when he stripped Hogan on a run and Oregon’s Tony Washington recovered the fumble. “He’s one of the guys we count on in the secondary,” cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu said. “It’s something we expect of him because he does it every day in practice.” Overall, Dargan finished with a game-high 12 tackles, increasing his team-leading season total to 65. INJURY RETURN: Senior receiver Keanon Lowe and sophomore running back Thomas Tyner returned to the lineup on Saturday after missing games with injury. Lowe hadn’t played since getting injured at UCLA on Oct. 11. He missed the win against Washington and then was in uniform against California last week but didn’t play. He started against the Cardinal and caught the first pass thrown by Mariota. Lowe finished with two catches for 31 yards. Tyner was injured against Washington and didn’t travel to the Cal game. He returned Saturday to rush 10 times for 63 yards and two touchdowns, including a dazzling 21-yard scoring run. Also back was defensive end Arik Armstead, who has been in and out of the lineup the last month. Armstead injured an ankle in the loss to Arizona on Oct. 2, missed the following week’s game against UCLA, played against Washington, and then sat out last week against the Golden Bears. The 6-foot-8 junior could be out again. After tackling Stanford running back Barry Sanders early in the second quarter, Armstead hopped off the field with the help of two teammates and didn’t return. EXTRA POINTS: With his 258 passing yards, Mariota inched closer to becoming the first Oregon quarterback with 9,000 yards passing in his career. The junior now has 8,883. … Freshman running back Royce Freeman rushed for 98 yards to snap his stretch of three straight games with at least 100 yards. … The announced attendance was 58,794, making it the 102nd consecutive sellout at Autzen Stadium.
