OF NOTE: The RVT 96G Red girls beat AC Samoa Intensity, 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout, to secure the club’s third straight U19 crown. » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> With just minutes to spare and his team comfortably ahead, Rogue Valley Timbers 97B Adrenaline head coach Scott Owings cracked open a duffel bag on the sidelines at U.S. Cellular Community Park and pulled out a handful of individual sunscreen packets for his players. The lotion might have been the only thing strong enough to cool down his club, which sizzled to greatness at the Rogue Memorial Challenge under a burning sun. Hot from start to finish, the Adrenaline capped off a dominant weekend with 3-0 victory over Rush Steelheaders Cascade Rush FC of Bend in the U17-U19 boys championship Monday. In a thrilling girls U19 championship, 96G Red’s Toreah Foy knocked in the deciding goal in a penalty kick shootout against AC Samoa Intensity of Arcata, Calif., helping the RVT club seal its third consecutive title and wrap up a 4-1 record in the tournament. Adrenaline, a U17 squad featuring talent from Medford, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, Ashland and North Bend, only allowed one goal en route to finishing 4-0-1 at the tourney. North Bend junior Ian Bream had two goals, including the go-ahead score, and South Medford junior Kyle Owings added a goal for the RVT club, which is made up of a group that has now captured titles at the U17-U19, U17 and U15 levels in the last three Rogue Memorial Challenge events. “Intensity and heart,” said coach Owings, who is Kyle’s father. “Those have been the biggest things for us. That is what always puts us over the top.” Bream linked up with Adrenaline several years ago during regional training. His travels proved worthwhile on Monday. “They welcomed me in,” the Far West League co-player of the year said. He made his presence felt about nine minutes into the match, breaking away from his defender after a free kick from 40 yards out and connecting on a heartstopping header from 6 yards away. “In a game like that, that first goal is the biggest deal,” Cascade Rush FC head coach Don Emerson said. “In a game like this, that first one means everything.” Owings was off to the races seconds into the second half and provided Adrenaline the 2-0 advantage. He corralled the ball after a bad touch before igniting a wild breakaway. At the end of his run he poked the ball past the Bend goalkeeper with his left foot from around 20 yards out, sinking to the ground as the ball splashed through the net. Bream made it 3-0 with a penalty kick with about 8½ minutes left in the contest. “Getting that second goal gives you insurance, but I like three, I always like three,” said coach Owings, whose club displayed exemplary fitness in the hot conditions. Proving key were goalkeeper Eric Benitez, who earned the shutout, and defenders Josue Reyes and Isaac Potter. In the U19 girls Cascade final, the shootout was needed after scoreless regulation and overtime sessions. AC Samoa began with a miss, followed by a goal from 96G Red’s Larissa Lakin, then a shot by AC Samoa that was blocked by winning goalkeeper Hayley Haas and a goal by 96G Red’s MaryBeth Barnum. The drama continued, as AC Samoa missed, 96G Red’s Bailey O’Connor scored, AC Samoa answered with a goal and 96G Red’s Emily Elmore missed. AC Samoa followed up with a goal, setting the stage for Foy’s big moment. The North Medford senior approached it calm, cool and collected. “I take PKs regularly for the team,” she said. “I think they are fun. I practice them a lot and for me it’s pretty consistent. I was just kinda calm and confident that we’d win because we have a really good goalie back there.” After halftime, RVT 96G Red head coach Kevin Primerano began plotting out a potential PK shootout lineup. “I figured rather than having to make the list in the heat of the moment, I’d start making the list after halftime just in case we got there,” he said. “There was no doubt in my mind once we got there that we would prevail.” In the boys U17-U19 Siskiyou championship match, RVT 95B beat NCU Aztecas, 3-2. Jose Lopez, Garrett Byrd and Benito Torres-Mata had the goals for the RVT club, which led 1-0 at halftime before rallying from a 2-1 deficit.
