Emily Dudley and Serena Barry scored 14 points apiece as the Cougars scored a big win, 52-37, over Phoenix in Skyline Conference girls basketball action on Friday. The victory for Illinois Valley (13-5, 5-3 Skyline) — its fourth straight — was the first over Phoenix in conference play in the four years coach Steve Morton has been in charge. He also called it the biggest win for the program in 10 years. "Honestly, from where this program has been, it’s huge," said Morton. "We’ve been playing ranked teams real well this year but we’ve just come up short. It’s nice to get a win like this." Though the Pirates aren’t ranked, their 6-1 mark coming into Friday’s contest was a conference co-leading best along with North Valley. Advertisement Phoenix, coming off a big 44-39 victory over second-place Lakeview on Tuesday, fell behind early and trailed by 8-10 points the majority of the game. "We just manned them up the whole game," said Morton. "Coming in we knew that shutting down their outside shooting was key. We knew (Ashley) McCarty can throw them in better than anyone in the league." Jaclyn Unruh scored 12 to lead the Pirates and Kat Cox added 10. McCarty managed just three points on one 3-point goal. Dudley, who scored all 14 of her points in the second half, and Barry combined for 23 of the Cougars’ 28 points over the final 16 minutes. Phoenix (12-6 overall) fell from its perch atop the conference standings and into second place at 6-2, while Illinois Valley moved into sole possession of fourth.
