CHICKENPOX Ashland schools expand chickenpox exclusion rules Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 13, 2015 at 5:23 PM Posted Jan. 13, 2015 at 5:23 PM » Social News More Ashland students at risk of getting chickenpox will be excluded from class under new rules implemented by the Ashland School District and Jackson County Public Health Tuesday. Under the rules, nonvaccinated students whose classmates or family members develop chickenpox will be excluded from school from day 10 to day 21 after exposure, the general incubation period for the virus. Exposure happens when the virus is at its most contagious — the day before a rash appears until the rash scabs over, usually five days after it appears. Children who have been exposed, but are immune to the disease — either because they have had the chickenpox or been vaccinated against it — can continue to come to school, officials said. Health officials said that the newly implemented exclusion time frame provides an opportunity for children to be vaccinated, then continue to attend classes. La Clinica plans a free chickenpox vaccination clinic from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, and 8 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at United Methodist Church, 175 N. Main St., Ashland. Officials recommend two doses of chickenpox vaccine given at least 28 days apart, but students who have received at least one shot before or after exposure can go to school, officials said. As of Jan. 5, when the first round of exclusions aimed at quelling Ashland's chickenpox outbreak took effect, 27 cases had been reported in December and January.
