Hidden Valley pulls away, 44-0 MURPHY -- It took a little longer than expected, but Hidden Valley showed exactly why it's a team to be reckoned with each year in the Skyline Conference. The Mustangs broke open a modest 16-0 halftime lead by scoring on their first four possessions in the second half to rout North Valley, 44-0. Hidden Valley's effort was one of four shutouts posted Friday in Skyline play, with Phoenix, Mazama and Henley each keeping pace with dominant performances. The Mustangs (4-1, 2-1 Skyline) used halftime adjustments that took advantage of North Valley's blitz to post 21 points in the third quarter. After a Nick Mason 6-yard scoring run, Hidden Valley quarterback Matt Kennedy added touchdown passes of 43 yards to Ryan Wilson and 30 yards to Mason to help send the Knights (1-4, 1-2) reeling. "Hidden Valley made some big plays down the stretch and that's what hurt us," said North Valley coach John George. "We played well in the first half, but again we made some mistakes and self-destructed down the stretch." Mason finished with 111 yards on 16 carries, with 96 of those yards coming in the first half. Mason rushed only two times in the second half. Kennedy completed 11 of 25 passes for 221 yards, while Wilson and Willy Isley each hauled in four passes for 82 yards. Bryon Monical also added two touchdowns for Phoenix. Monical scored on a 3-yard first quarter run, then hooked up with Dawson on an 8-yard TD pass in the final period. The Pirates totalled 250 yards in offense. Chris Loftin gained 60 of the 146 yards Phoenix gained on the ground. Dawson was 9-of-16 passing for 104 yards and Monical caught three passes for 48 yards. The Pirate defense limited the Honkers to 37 yards rushing and 95 total yards. Brendan Quirke got Mazama on the scoreboard with a 58-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown with 6:04 remaining in the opening quarter. Starkey gave the Vikings a 13-0 lead on a 20-yard touchdown run with less than a minute to go in the first period. Mazama totalled 378 yards in offense with 281 coming on the ground. Robert Draper led the Vikings rushing attack with 89 yards and Duke Wynne added 84. Illinois Valley was limited to 108 yards -- all on the ground. Brandon Henry was the Cougars leading rusher with 54 yards on 15 carries. Henley gained 400 yards on the ground and added 101 more through the air. Conover was the Hornets leading rusher with 108 yards on 10 carries, while sophomore Nick Telle gained 98 yards on 10 carries. Telle scored on a 29-yard run in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Frank Gauntz filled in for Henley starting quarterback Nick Thede, who didn't play because of a hairline leg fracture. Thede is expected back for next week's conference showdown against Mazama. Rogue River had minus 17 yards rushing on 26 carries. The Chieftains completed 5-of-20 passes for 31 yards.
