Wilson School dedicates field to ex-employee Wilson Elementary School will hold a dedication ceremony Saturday honoring a former employee. The school will dedicate its ball field to Charlene "Shorty" Pryer Mayer at 1 p.m. The field is at the corner of Johnson and Corona streets. Mayer was a stand-out player in the World War II-era All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League. The league was memorialized in the movie, "A League of Their Own," starring Tom Hanks. Madonna played a role that mirrored some of Mayer's on-field accomplishments. Wilson staff and the rest of the Medford School District are memorializing Mayer for her influence on students. A plaque will recall "her philosophy to play fair, lose with grace, and win with dignity." Mayer worked in various student-monitor positions in the Medford district for 25 years. She retired from Wilson School in 1994. She died in June. Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, Oregon USA
